€130k LEADER injection into Mountbellew Sheep Festival

Galway Rural Development (GRD) have announced that they will be providing a LEADER grant of almost €130,000 in support of the European Sheep Shearing and Wool-handling Championships at Mountbellew (Shearfest), this upcoming June bank holiday weekend.

Pictured at Mountbellew Mart, at the announcement of the €130k LEADER allocation for Mountbellew Sheep Festival, were Oliver Noone, Frank Keane (LEADER), Vincent Flynn, Steve Dolan (CEO of Galway Rural Development), Michael Cunniffe (Chairperson of Shearfest), Conor Carty (LEADER), and Martin Raftery. Shearfest 2025 takes place from May 30th to June 1st.

The funding to the Mountbellew Social Development Co-op Society will focus on targeted efforts to promote and deliver the event, taking place from May 30th to June 1st, thereby attracting a broad audience to Mountbellew and its surrounding areas.

Building on the foundations of the 2024 All-Ireland Festival, there is hope to increase attendance and create a significant draw for the region which will leave a positive economic and cultural impact.

Speaking on behalf of the Festival Committee, Chairperson Michael Cunniffe said

“We’re delighted to receive this support and Shearfest 2025 is going to be a roaring success. In addition to marketing, this approval will address the event’s key logistical needs. Funding will be used for all the essential equipment, along with other supplies and services. There will also be outstanding entertainment on show which will further enhance the atmosphere.”

CEO of GRD Steve Dolan said “After announcing Mountbellew as our first ‘Smart Village’ four years ago, we followed-up with training which saw the establishment of several new initiatives. We have since provided a range of supports, including most recently to the playground, we’ve opened a Mountbellew office, and we are delighted to again demonstrate our commitment to this special town. All credit to the Mountbellew community.”

Senior Manager at GRD Conor Carty said he was not aware of any festival receiving such a positive endorsement of support. “This is an unprecedented approval” said Conor.

“We are confident that the Mountbellew team are going to deliver something that will leave a legacy across the community for its different groups and business. As a farmer myself, I’m really looking forward to attending and sharing in what will be a truly massive festival.”

Councillor Michael Connolly, also a director of GRD, commended the efforts saying “This event will attract thousands of visitors, benefiting the local businesses such as restaurants and retailers. By fostering tourism, encouraging spending, and showcasing the region’s agricultural heritage; this project will help build a sustainable and vibrant local economy. Moreover, it will ensure that a well-organised, safe, and efficient festival is delivered.”
