The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme provides funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure.

Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

It also provides support for the necessary repair, maintenance, enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in rural areas across Ireland.

The scheme supports sporting and recreational pursuits. It helps to make use of the resources of the countryside that contribute to healthy active lifestyles. It supports the economic and tourism potential of the area for both local communities and tourist visitors alike.

It provides funding for

  • development, extensions, and repair of trails, walkways, cycleways, and blueways

  • improved access to outdoor leisure or recreational facilities

  • development of outdoor recreational infrastructure

GRD has been approving projects across East Galway for the past five years. In 2022, GRD secured approvals of almost €80,000 for Mountbellew Riverside Nature Park, the Hymany Way (Portumna to Ballygar), and the Shannon Riverside Walkway near Eyrecourt.

The People’s Transition

On the back of the hugely successful Smart Villages programme, the town of Mountbellew has been chosen as the County Galway location for a 2023 community-led development project for climate justice - The People's Transition.

After initial meetings and focus groups to discuss the project's potential, the TASC 'People’s Transition’ project is intended to assist the community to benefit from the transition to a zero-carbon society and has the support of Smart Villages Mountbellew.
