Galway Rural Development - Tuesday, November 29, 2016

FIT TOWNS 2017

To all groups/clubs/community organisations in Galway.

Galway Sports Partnership is delighted to announce that it will be running the FIT TOWNS initiative once again in 2017.

FIT TOWNS is a competitive process open to all groups/clubs and organisations in Galway who wish to organise and provide a six week programme of sport and / or physical activity for their local communities. IT is supported by Sport Ireland and there is a prize fund of €15,000 available for distribution across three categories of entries, €5000 in each category –

1. Urban areas and large towns of population over 2000 persons,

2. Rural areas and smaller towns/areas of population under 2000,

3. An off-shore island category.

FIT TOWNS was first run in 2015 and has proven a huge success with all those who participated over the past two years. Apart from the funding which has been put to good use by the winning participants in each category, it has inspired local groups, clubs and communities to work together in the pursuit of physical fitness opportunities for their local populations through a series of programmes and initiatives organised and delivered in the local community. All members of the local population have been catered for in the past and programmes and initiatives have varied from walking, jogging, cycling to indoor activity sessions and water based activities.

The FIT TOWNS initiative is run from late January to March each year immediately following on from Operation Transformation, but many of the initiatives organised and run during this period as part of the competition have been sustained long after the completion date. This has proven to be the real success of the initiative.

We are now inviting and encouraging clubs, groups and organisations to consider entering the FIT TOWNS initiative for 2017, to consider working together in their local communities and to organise initiatives and activities that will benefit all persons from both a physical fitness and healthy lifestyle perspective. Full details on the FIT TOWNS initiative are available from Galway Sports Partnership on 091 509572 or by email to galwayactive@galwaycoco,ie.

Also there are information sessions being held all around the County, check here for the one nearest to you.
