The Special Housing Aid for the Elderly Scheme

The Special Housing Aid Scheme for the Elderly has been operating as a community employment scheme for a number of years as a partnership between Galway Rural Development, FÁS and the Health Service Executive. Participants on the employment, utilise referrals from the Health Service Executive and provide practical help in upgrading peoples houses who can provide practical help modernising people’s houses.

In the last two years the Alzeimer’s Society have become project partners and now a number of participants on the scheme are trained to provide respite care for people who are caring for a relative suffering from Alzeimer’s. This service provides a welcome break for people who are otherwise providing twenty four hour care for their loved ones.
