Aughrim
Aughrim is a neat and historic village on the main Galway - Dublin road, near Ballinasloe. The name means 'the horse's back', from the shape of one of the low ridges that are a feature of the local landscape. Its proximity to Ballinasloe and its location on the main Dublin-Galway road make it an ideal base for visiting Galway.
It is also nice for walking, due to its flat topography.
The award-winning Battle of Aughrim Interpretative Centre commemorates the Battle of Aughrim and the monument to William James McNevin is another entry in history claimed by Aughrim.
